The entrance to the reserve is on Skyline Ranch Road at the reserve's northwest corner.  Access within the reserve is by trail only.  An unimproved campground is available for short-term use by students and researchers.  Visitors must bring their own firewood.  Arrangements for use of the reserve must be made with the reserve manager at the UC Irvine campus well in advance of the proposed visit.

Species lists from vascular plant and vertebrate surveys are available from the reserve manager.  Collections of plants from the Burns Reserve and the immediate vicinity are kept at UC Irvine's Museum of Systematic Biology and the UC Riverside Herbarium.  Collections and data sets from Joshua Tree National Park are available through arrangement with the National Park Service.
